About WCM
Wikimedia Community Malta is a wiki user group based in Malta.
This group aims to encourage the uptake of wiki activity among Maltese communities, through the implementation of various wiki activities, projects, and training & outreach events. Special attention is given to Wikipedia.
We started operating formally as a Malta-registered voluntary organization in early 2016 and in August 2016 Wikimedia Community User Group Malta was officially granted user group status through the Wikimedia Foundation's Affiliations Committee.

Wiki Loves Monuments
Wiki Loves Monuments is an annual international photographic competition based upon the topic of built cultural heritage. It is one of the largest photographic competitions in the world, with the 2020 edition attracting the submission of almost 23,000 photos from 7,667 participants in 51 countries across the world.
Malta has been participating in Wiki Loves Monuments through Wikimedia Community Malta since 2016. Participants select from Wikipedia's list of monuments in Malta, which is based on the National Inventory of the Cultural Property of the Maltese Islands (NICPMI) and the Malta Scheduled Property Register from the Malta Planning Authority,
How does it work?
Throughout the month of September Participants submit photos of relevant monuments/buildings to Wikimedia Commons using a Creative Commons license throughout the competition. Local winners are then selected by a local panel of judges, who also nominate 10 photographs to contest the international award, where the overall winner is selected by an international jury.
Wiki Loves Art
Wiki Loves Art is a fluid set of activities associated with content development and Wikipedia editing activities from Wikimedia Community Malta.
The first iteration of Wiki Love Art in Malta was produced in collaboration with the Gabriel Caruana Foundation in 2017. This also included a public discussion on Documenting Maltese heritage through Wikipedia, produced with the Department of Information and Archive Science at the University of Malta.
Around the start of 2018, WCM was approached by Blitz, a Valletta-based contemporary art organization, to participate in the international Art+Feminism initiative. We immediately developed the idea for this activity to form part of on-going activities around Wiki Loves Art, particularly relating to the documentation of the Spazju Kreattiv Art Collection, coordinated by the M3P Foundation.
How does it work?
A number of sessions relating to creating and editing pages on Wikipedia and the M3P wiki about visual arts in Malta are held annually within the Wiki Loves Art programme during February and March.
Wiki Loves Art introduces the mechanics of the wiki platform and its value as a way to document the arts in Malta, along with edit-a-thon sessions providing a hands-on approach to editing wiki pages relating to the arts.
Other activities
WCM is also responsible for a fluid set of activities associated with Wikipedia editing and content development.
VERSION 1
Art+Feminism
Around the start of 2018, WCM was approached by Blitz, a Valletta-based contemporary art organization, to participate in the international Art+Feminism initiative. We immediately developed the idea for this activity to form part of on-going activities, particularly relating to the documentation of the Spazju Kreattiv Art Collection, coordinated by the M3P Foundation. This takes place in early March, around International Women's Day.
CEE Spring
From 2020, these activities have also included the translation of specific articles about Maltese subject into Central and Eastern European languages, as well as the inclusion of articles about these regions in Europe into the Maltese-language Wikipedia, known as Wikipedija. The CEE contest takes place every year throughout the month of Spring.
VERSION 2
Other photo contests
Since 2022, WCM has also been organising two other annual photo contests. Wiki Loves Folkore takes place in January and February focusing on Malta's folk culture and intangible cultural heritage. Wiki Loves Earth promotes the diverse flora and fauna in the 300 protected natural sites around Malta and Gozo throughout the months of June and July.
Writing Wikipedia Articles
Another set of WCM activities focus on Wikipedia article writing and editing, with an opportunity for translation.
Art+Feminism & Feminism and Folklore are held annually in March to address the gender gap on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects.
Rebbiegħa CEE: From 2020, the translation of specific articles about Maltese subjects into Central and Eastern European languages, as well as the inclusion of articles about these regions in Europe into the Maltese-language Wikipedia, takes place throughout the Spring.
